The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has expressed that Rafael Caro Quintero, the head of the Guadalajara Cartel recently extradited to the U.S. by Mexico, will be prosecuted "to the fullest extent of the law." Caro Quintero faces charges for the murder of DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in 1985, and Trump has labeled him a "wicked murderer."
In statements from the President at the Department of Justice, it is highlighted that thanks to joint efforts with Mexico, the extradition of 29 important cartel leaders, including Caro Quintero, who had been wanted for years for Camarena's murder, was achieved. Trump also emphasized the arrests of undocumented migrants, referring to them as "criminals."
Trump pointed out the decrease in drug trafficking since he assumed the presidency in January 2017 and highlighted the increase in migrant arrests. He expressed his support for imposing tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, stating that they will continue until the flow of drugs into the country stops.
Regarding the drug campaign that his administration will launch, Trump promised a significant reduction in drug consumption, thanking the suggestion from Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum. In turn, the family of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena thanked Trump for his efforts to ensure Caro Quintero is tried in the U.S., considering this step a move towards justice.
Caro Quintero, 72 years old, pleaded not guilty in a Brooklyn court in New York, where his case will be tried and he could face the death penalty. In Mexico, this drug trafficker spent 28 years in prison for the crime, maintaining his innocence throughout. Camarena's family highlighted Trump's action and dedication to this case, which has remained unresolved for decades.
